Howard County police are investigating the death of a man struck by a train last night in Ellicott City. Detectives do not suspect foul play and believe the man may have been sleeping or passed out on the tracks when he was struck.
Investigators have identified the victim as a 41-year-old local homeless man, but are not releasing his name until next of kin can be located and notified.
Police were called to the tracks approximately a half-mile from the end of Maryland Ave. in Ellicott City around 8:45 p.m. after a train engineer reported striking someone laying in the tracks. The engineer reported that he saw an unknown object in the tracks and unsuccessfully tried to stop the train before striking it.
The victim, who had identification in a wallet, was deceased when police arrived. Detectives found alcohol in the victim’s backpack and detected the odor of alcohol on the victim. Police are working to notify next of kin at this time.
