The Governor admitted in his State of the State address that Maryland is in quite a bad fiscal position, yet he bragged that the State still has a AAA bond rating.  On the surface, this seems good.  But the ability to borrow money means the ability to put more financial debt onto the taxpayers and future taxpayers -- our children and grandchildren -- so that they can continue to push their failed fiscal agendas.

I thought the Governor's most dangerous statement was when he said that it was government's job to step up to the plate and help business.  I haven't spoken to any business people lately who believe they need any more "help" from the government.  Quite to the contrary, they need the government to get off their backs and out of their pockets.

This week the House Judiciary Committee heard a bill which would prohibit the State from recognizing gay marriages performed in other states.  This bill was introduced by Delegate Emmett Burns, who is a pastor in Baltimore County and who strongly believes in the traditional view of marriage as between a man and a woman.  His bill was quickly voted down by the Judiciary Committee.

Believe it or not, I am introducing what I call the Obama Campaign Finance Reform Act for Maryland.  It would prevent candidates and elected officials in Maryland from accepting money as campaign contributions from foreign nationals.  If you remember, this was part of President Obama's State of the Union address.  It's quite interesting that since Obama brought this to my attention, a check of campaign finance records show that Democrats receive far more contributions from foreign sources than do Republicans.  I realized that this is a fantastic bill that needs to become law.

Over the past two weeks I  have had time to listen to my Democrat colleagues to see what their feelings are about what direction the State and the nation ought to be going in.  They pretty much feel in general that the Massachusetts election was just a small bump in their road, caused by not having the right candidate in the Senate race.  They feel that they need to continue pushing their (failed) agenda, and that, given time, this will all work out for them.  Some might call this whistling past the graveyard.

In short, at this point we're looking at more of the same as we saw last year from the party in control.
