Annapolis, Md. — Several dead bats and over two hundred visibly affected bats were found during a survey conducted in an Allegany County cave near Cumberland on March 5. The bats observed during the survey exhibited a white fungus concentrated around the muzzle of the infected bats. The findings are consistent with White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) and if confirmed, this will be Maryland’s first documented occurrence of the disease.

The Virginia General Assembly voted last Tuesday to boost the state's maximum speed limit from 65 to 70 MPH. With the encouragement of newly sworn-in Governor Bob McDonnell (R), the measure sailed through the state Senate 29-11 and 71-26 in the House.

Beginning Monday, March 1, 2010, as part of an on-going comprehensive traffic safety initiative, the Westminster Police Department will activate two revenue producing red light cameras at two intersections within the City of Westminster.

Red light cameras have been installed to monitor violations on eastbound and westbound MD Route 140 at Malcolm Drive (including the dual left turn lanes) as well as southbound MD Route 97 at Nursery Round (including the left turn lane). The cameras will monitor traffic twenty four hours a day.
