"Friends and neighbors complain that taxes are indeed very heavy, and if those laid on by the government were the only ones we had to pay, we might the more easily discharge them; but we have many others, and much more grievous to some of us. We are taxed twice as much by our idleness, three times as much by our pride, and four times as much by our folly."

-- Benjamin Franklin

“I have tremendous respect for state employees and the vitally important work they do on behalf of the citizens of Maryland,” Ehrlich said.  “They are the backbone of state government.  They care for our most vulnerable citizens and keep all of us safe.  As Governor, I will end the practice of furloughs, which only demoralize state employees while doing nothing to fix Maryland’s long-term structural deficit.”

MCEA President Stephen J. Schaefer said, “We are proud to endorse Bob Ehrlich for Governor of Maryland.  We need Bob back in the State House because of his unwavering respect for state employees and their families.  We need him now more than ever.”

MCEA has protected the rights of state employees for 75 years.  It is the state’s oldest and largest independent labor organization for public employees.  They negotiate wages and pensions, and protect the merit system from political interference.  All decisions of the union are made by the members, including the endorsement of Bob Ehrlich for Governor.
