Ehrlich Touts MCEA Union Endorsment

Bob Ehrlich today received the endorsement of the Maryland Classified Employees Association in his campaign for Governor of Maryland. MCEA has more than 10,000 members, including current and retired state employees. Their backing for Ehrlich reflects mutual respect Ehrlich and the union developed while he was Governor from 2003-2007, as well as a shared agreement that there should be no further furloughs of State employees. Ehrlich has pledged to end this practice imposed by the O’Malley Administration.
“I have tremendous respect for state employees and the vitally important work they do on behalf of the citizens of Maryland,” Ehrlich said. “They are the backbone of state government. They care for our most vulnerable citizens and keep all of us safe. As Governor, I will end the practice of furloughs, which only demoralize state employees while doing nothing to fix Maryland’s long-term structural deficit.”
MCEA President Stephen J. Schaefer said, “We are proud to endorse Bob Ehrlich for Governor of Maryland. We need Bob back in the State House because of his unwavering respect for state employees and their families. We need him now more than ever.”
MCEA has protected the rights of state employees for 75 years. It is the state’s oldest and largest independent labor organization for public employees. They negotiate wages and pensions, and protect the merit system from political interference. All decisions of the union are made by the members, including the endorsement of Bob Ehrlich for Governor.
